Making life that little bit easier.

Electric Beds – Who Can Benefit?

Electric beds are beds which allow you to adjust both the upper and lower body positions via a remote control and adjust the height of the bed itself. They may help a variety of medical complaints and exponentially increase comfort.

Many medical conditions can actually be worsened by poor sleep quality and uncomfortable sleeping positions. Therefore, in this blog post, we bring you through the various benefits that electric beds can offer people with medical conditions or ailments such as poor mobility, swelling complaints, arthritis, chronic pain, respiratory conditions, acid reflux & heartburn.

People with mobility issues:

Electric beds allow you to control your sleeping position and can be particularly useful for those of you who with mobility issues or who may be living alone. Not only do they help you sit up or lie down, they provide additional support while you sit up in bed.

If you are bed bound this can make an amazing difference to the quality of your everyday life. While bed bound, the optional massage function can also aid your circulation, which in turn helps prevent bed sores.

People with swelling complaints:

People who suffer from swelling complaints, such as edema, can relieve the pressure and pain by elevating their affected limbs. With edema, body fluids tend to pool in the lower part of the limbs – generally the feet, ankles and lower legs.

By raising your limbs above heart level, the pressure in this part of the body is released and circulation is improved. Electric beds help by keeping your affected limbs raised throughout the night, or for as long as you need relief.

This is a far more consistent method than placing pillows beneath limbs since you do not need to constantly make adjustments or worry about losing your support during the night.

People with arthritis:

When you suffer from arthritis your joints can become tender and inflamed. As mentioned above, swelling can be helped by elevation. However, beds with massage functions can also help.

Many electric beds come with therapeutic massage controls built into the mattress or available as an additional feature. These massage controls are managed by remote control and help to gently relieve the aches of sore muscles and joints.

People suffering chronic pain:

Electric Beds can help people with chronic pains in various ways. For one, they help by easing you in and out of bed every day. Jerky movements such as sitting up quickly or lowering yourself, can inflame pain.

Electrically adjustable beds also help by providing a range of positions to sleep in, depending on your ailment. Each time you elevate your back or legs, you are realigning your vertebrae and adjusting the pressure they place on your nerves and muscles.

For example, if your lower back is sore, it is recommended that you elevate your legs, creating a pelvic tilt which can relieve strain on the affected muscles. If your upper back is sore, it helps to raise and support your torso.

People with respiratory conditions:

Sleeping in an elevated position can help increase oxygen flow during your sleep, alleviating breathing disorders such as asthma or sleep apnea. Sleeping in a horizontal position can increase airway resistance as gravity effects throat tissues and causes secretions to accumulate.

Tongues can also loll back and block your airway. When you sleep in a raised position, not only does your tongue stay in place, but fluids are also drained from the lungs, preventing congestion.

People with allergies or a head cold may also find this particularly helpful. Sleeping in a slightly more upright position has the additional benefit of decreasing snoring, as snoring often occurs due to blocked airways.

People with acid reflux & heartburn:

Doctors often recommend elevating the upper body to alleviate the symptoms of acid reflux. As those with acid reflux may have damage to their lower esophageal sphincter (commonly known as stomach valve), by laying flat, the acid can move to your esophagus, which is what causes and exasperates heartburn and acid reflux. Raising your torso 6 to 8 inches higher aids your stomach in retaining its acid.
